T-Mobile Galaxy S4 on AT&T

Posted on Friday, October 4th, 2013 at 1:00 PM in geek, life, tech by Michael

I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S4 from T-Mobile. I liked the fact that they have an unlocked boot loader and I am trying to cut down on my outrageous phone bill. One thing that was a requirement was that the device had to work with AT&T’s 4G & LTE bands in case T-Mobile didn’t have all of the coverage that AT&T did. So I did a comparison of specs between AT&T and T-Mobile as shown below.

T-Mobile vs AT&T Galaxy S4

Turns out they’re basically the same hardware. Sadly, T-Mobile’s coverage isn’t as good as AT&T’s is so I had to swap back in my AT&T SIM card. I can confirm from actual usage that AT&T’s service works GREAT on the T-Mobile Galaxy S4!

I did have a bit of trouble getting the service to work entirely, AT&T wasn’t the most willing to help, so below are the APN settings you’ll need to get your phone working correctly.

Name: ATT PTA (This can be whatever you want)

APN: pta

Proxy: Not Set

Port: Not Set

User name: Not Set

Password: Not Set

Server: Not Set

MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net

MMS Proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net

MMS Port: 80

MCC: 310

MNC: 410

Authentication Type: Not Set

APN Type: default,mms,supl,hipri

APN Protocol: IPv4

APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4

Bearer: Unspecified

That’s it! Enjoy your T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 on AT&T!

is this going to work on pre-paid from AT&T?

    • Yes, since it’s the same bands as regular AT&T, it should work just fine.

So you replaced your Metro simple card with Att’s, put in the script above and it worked?

Sorry mentioned to type sim card

I took my t mobile sim card out, put my Att sim card in, entered the info as stated above, saved it, restarted my phone; and got an error msg. So I put the t mobile sim card back. I’ll have to do it again to tell you what the error msg said. Something like __________mms#

    • I do know for sure that Wifi calling will not work outside of T-Mobile, so that may be an error you’re seeing. You’ll just need to turn it off.

I see you purchased your phone thru tmobile. I wonder if that makes a difference, as I got mine at att.

    • If you purchased it from AT&T, then this post wouldn’t apply. You can just put your att Sim back in and should be fine…

I have a T-Mobile S4. T-mobile gave me the “sim unlock” code. Since it’s been unlocked, I can put an AT&T sim in and make calls, but I get no data, which is why I came to this page. I followed this guide, and my phone won’t let me save the APN settings. I tried another guide with slightly different AT&T credentials, and my phone wouldn’t let me save those APN settings either… For kicks, I tried saving T-Mobile APN settings, and it lets me save those…. Anybody else experience this? Or know of a work-around? Thanks!!

Let me just say that this worked beautifully, after a long telephone call with an AT&T representative who told me I can’t do anything to fix data. Thank you.

    • You’re welcome. Glad I could help. To this day my T-Mobile S4 has been working flawlessly with AT&T with the above settings. Thanks for the comment!
