@agdurrette yes, yes you do. :P

Hmmm, what to do?

Posted on Sunday, August 15th, 2010 at 8:42 PM in life, privacy by Michael

I recently got a flier from the company (Sun Communities aka Sun) that owns the mobile home park I live in, and it said they were giving out my information (name and phone number at minimum) to a third party company so that they can do a survey for them…I don’t know about you, but I don’t like my information randomly being given out…especially when a huge public company could just as well do the survey themselves…

Here’s what I sent them via their contact page on their website, and I did the same on the community’s website as well:

I recently received a door flier from Sun Communities, Inc and am very
disheartened by its content. In here it states, and I quote, "Please be
advised that you may be called by The Housing Marketplace on our behalf and
asked to provide feedback regarding your living experience in your Sun
community."

Since when has it become acceptable for your company to give out MY
PERSONAL INFORMATION to a 3rd party company without explicitly asking for
permission and just assuming that I would have no issues with it? I am in
NO way comfortable or even REMOTELY ok with the fact that you have given
out my information to a third party company. HOW can a company, especially
one of your size, just think that personal information is of no value, same
with privacy?

Who else have you given my information out to without my permission? Who do
I need to talk some sense into so this doesn't happen again?

I'm VERY enthralled to see your reply.

I got the following voicemail from the regional manager, Josh:

And then today I got the following email from the COO of Sun, John:

Dear Mr. Secord,

Sun Communities is highly committed to providing a pleasant living
environment for all of our residents. The Housing Marketplace is a company
we have engaged over many years for various programs and most recently, to
aid us in obtaining resident feedback solely for the purpose I stated
above.

We can assure you that The Housing Marketplace does not further disseminate
your information to any other entity. We are extremely mindful of our
residents' desire for privacy and we do not distribute their information
freely to outside sources.

We appreciate your feedback and hopefully this will alleviate any of your
concerns. We hope that you are enjoying your living experience with us and
look forward to a long term relationship with you.

Sincerely,
John

I’ve been trying to figure out how exactly I want to approach both of these people, and I’ve got some ideas, but I’d like some opinions as well.

Please leave your comments/ideas in the comments.

id say if you still dont want them sending your information to people, reguardless of who it is, send cease and desist :)

I mean you could threaten to move out but I’m not sure if that is an option for you right now :/ I dunno what kind of action you could take legally either….

You can always contact the EFF. They’ll know what to do. Cheaper than lawyers too.
(I couldn’t hear the voicemail for some reason, do you have a transcript?)

Complain. You have the right to defend your personal information, and they have no right to give it out freely. It’s your information. I say take it to the bosses. Small claims court, even. Or, go the revenge route, get their information, and publish it online after you notify them that you are doing so. :)

I planned on complaining, that’s how this got started. As for their information…well, they’re a public company so it’s already out there to a point…And the COO is the boss, he’s pretty much the CEO…
